ARCHBISHOP IDENTIFIES MISMANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES AS CAUSE OF INSECURITY
Jun 24, 2019

KADUNA, NIGERIA -

Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso of Kaduna Archdiocese has identified mismanagement of resources and absence of the presence of Government in some parts of the country as some of the reasons for the current spate of insecurity in the country.

The Archbishop identified these challenges in his homily at the opening Mass for the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests, held recently, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Television, Kaduna. The theme for the AGM, held at the Catholic Media Centre, Kaduna, was: “The Imperative of Good Governance for a Secure and Prosperous Nation; and it was attended by members from all the Archdioceses and dioceses in the country.

Archbishop Ndagoso noted: “Insecurity starts from where there is absence of government. The absence of government in certain parts of the country has brought us to where we are today.” He added: “Our problem has always been the management of resources of the land.”

Expressing concern on the spate of insecurity in most parts of the country, Archbishop Ndagoso described the theme of the meeting as very apt and urged the priests to discuss with utmost concern the challenges of insecurity in the country; and the possibility of probable solutions from their point of view.

The Archbishop inferred that the lack of government presence in some communities in Borno State has made these communities to depend on the Boko Haram fanatics for their needs to survive. He added that the fanatics take undue advantage of this lack of government presence among these North-East region communities to entrench themselves and continue their atrocities against the people of the area.

Noting that these fanatics have constituted themselves into an authority and made the people to pay taxes and other levies, Archbishop Ndagoso added that this services being provided by a splinter group of the Boko Haram portend great danger for the country; especially in the area of the provision of adequate security and protection for the people of the North East.
